ACCESS-OA is an international consortium of orthopedic surgeons, patients, and researchers working together to improve access to care and patient outcomes for hip and knee joint replacement surgery for individuals with obesity or a high body mass index.

ACCESS-OA was initiated in fall 2023. This working group used participatory action methods to engage key shareholders in co-design and collaborative work. Together we identified research and practice uncertainties regarding obesity and joint replacement from the perspective of specialist orthopedic surgeons and patients with relevant lived expertise. We then voted on priority areas to guide progress in research and practice to inform improvements in delivery of care and patient health outcomes.
Results and recommendations from our priority-setting meetings will be published shortly. Please check back for more details.
The work of ACCESS-OA continues, with ongoing research, education, and advocacy work led by teams of academic researchers, patients, and surgeons.
